Welcome to the BEST month ever, FEBRUARY! Some may know that I love my birthday like it's an actual holiday. Technically it is... with it being Groundhog's Day and all. With each year I gain, I think back to the all positives and negatives that occurred within the last 365 days. Here's a compilation of a few of my favorite lessons.
Brighter Days Lie Ahead
Last year, I graduated from THE University of Georgia and was over the moon. Somewhere along my sophomore year, I truly believed that graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Science was just not possible. From struggling in class to figuring how my student account balance would be paid, it was a lot. But each and every time, God came through in the clutch. I literally worried for nothing and ended up lacking for nothing. After graduation, all I could do was laugh at how everything had worked out. I was able to graduate alongside some of the best friends a young lady could ask for and become an alumna of the pride of the South.
Walk. Run. Fly. Go.
I'm not too sure anyone finds it easy to up-and-leave a place they've called home for the last 10+ years! I found out I'd gotten accepted to this wonderful AmeriCorp program about 4 weeks before it was time for me to pack my things and head to the North. You know what? It's still one of the best decisions I've made in a long time. This last year has pulled me soooo far out of my comfort zone! I'm thriving in every second of it because becoming uncomfortable and not being in control of every, single, minute detail is a skill I lack but have consciously chosen to work on.
"You Tried It"
I'm literally busting out laughing as I think on this. "You tried it" is a phrase I say pretty frequently when one attempts to be extra or do the most. As a MAJOR homebody, going out and trying new things has ALWAYS been a bit of a hassle. Last year I made a decision to go out more and experience new things and since then, I've "tried it" each and every day. I've been extra and lived life in the little way that I can. Traveling when the opportunity presents itself, attending concerts, poetry slams, art galleries... basically anything and everything that would get me out of the house. Where have you always wanted to go? What have you always wanted to attend? Try It. Be Extra. Do The Most.
Who Do You Say You Are?
I've never been a timid person by any standard. Instead, I've always tried to exude confidence and strength. Even with all of that, I too, struggled with inadequacy and discontentment. I am nowhere near where I thought I'd be... and I'm GRATEFUL for that! Within the last 365 days, I have learned to be SUPER content with my life while making strides – by the grace of God – for the things I want in life. I have professed over my life that I am intelligent, successful, strong.. you get it. When I began to define who I am with what's in the Word of God and not my status, my mindset shifted and I became a happier person. If theres one thing I could use to encourage anyone, it would be to proclaim who are. We weren't created to be like the next man or woman. Bask in that uniqueness.
I am OVERJOYED to walk into this new year full of learning experiences and curves, highs, lows, and new opportunities for growth. Thank you to everyone who has played a part in that last year... Here's to another great birthday! Happy Black History Month! To all my February babies, Happy Birthday in Advance! Let me know when your birthdays are and what you have planned!
